Dayton Divorce Statistics – Dayton Divorce Lawyers [2010-02-09]

Reza Pirnia

Today, divorce is a hot topic across the world. While the United States does not have the highest worldwide divorce rate (according to divorcerate.com), “it is estimated that 40% of all (U.S.) marriages have ended in divorce as of 2008.” (Wikipedia)

“The overall divorce rate is in decline in the United States, but so is the marriage rate.” (Wikipedia)

Ohio marriage and divorce

According to the Ohio Department of Health, Center for Vital and Health Statistics:

  • Ohio marriages in 1991 were 94,787 and divorces were 52,203.
  • In 2003 Ohio marriages were 76,908 and divorces were 42,812.
  • The overall population of Ohio grew from 10,847, 115 to 11, 485, 910 people, but marriage and divorce proportionately decreased.
  • Ohio couples divorce at a rate of 3.7% per 1,000 people per year.

What does this tell you? Marriage as an institution is declining and the divorce to marriage ratio has slightly increased despite the reduction in both marriages and divorces.

Dayton marriage and divorce

Dayton, Ohio falls in lockstep with this state and national downtrend. The Greater Dayton area or what the U.S. census Bureau calls the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area consists of four Ohio counties—Greene, Miami, Montgomery, and Preble. The overall Greater Dayton population estimate was 848,153 people in 2000. Greater Dayton had a lower population estimate of 836,544 in 2008. (US Census Bureau)

The Ohio Department of Health, Center for Vital and Health Statistics reported:

  • Greater Dayton had 7,231 marriages and 4388 divorces in 1991.
  • Greater Dayton had 5,850 marriages and 3383 divorces in 2003.

For every six new marriages in the Greater Dayton area, three couples file for divorce. Marriages still exceed the number of divorces, but the margin is narrowing, with divorce gaining.

Does a Dayton divorce attorney think of these statistics?

Regardless of statistics, divorce attorneys in Dayton stay busy helping people file for divorce and resolving family issues. Couples continue to divorce under Ohio divorce laws and seek legal guidance for the most suitable approach.

Another interesting statistic about U.S. divorces is the estimate that upwards of 95% of divorces are uncontested or settled out of court. Couples often reach an agreement among themselves, using lawyers, mediators, or collaborative counsel regarding child, property, and support matters. (Wikipedia)
